# Some Assembly Required 1

<figure><img src="/files/4GtTxJaFMwuGxvVc4k90" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

We enter here and see this. Looking at the source code, it's very hard to read.&#x20;

Let's copy paste the code into a code deobfuscater. <http://jsnice.org/> <https://beautifier.io/>

Before moving on, let's answer some questions:

### Whats WebAssembly?

Normally websites run JavaScript. WebAssembly is a second language browsers can run — but it's designed to be fast and hard to read, not human-friendly. Wasm is a low level, assembly-like language optimized for safe and efficient execution in modern web browsers. Its binary instruction format priorities compact, fast, and portable code that can achieve near native performance[5](https://dev.to/drs_software/understanding-webassembly-the-fundamentals-dpn#fn5).

On the browser, Wasm is designed to run alongside and inter-operate with JavaScript, extending the possibilities for client-side applications.

### What is the .wasm extension? What is .wat?&#x20;

The .wasm extension is the actual binary file — what the browser downloads and runs. It looks like this if you open it raw: (hex)

```
00 61 73 6d 01 00 00 00 01 07 02 60 00 00 60 02
```

**The `.wat` extension,** WAT = **WebAssembly Text format**. It's the human-readable version of the same code. You can convert between wat and wasm.&#x20;

```
.wasm  =  binary (what the computer runs)
.wat   =  text   (what humans can read)
```

### Solving it:

Knowing this, we need to fetch the .wasm file the server uses:

<figure><img src="/files/Iyc8AIY23hErw5XFZXlH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

We know the file is called so we can juse do this:

```
wget http://mercury.picoctf.net:26318/JIFxzHyW8W -q -O script.wasm
```

Once we get the script, we can convert it to wat to make it readable for us.&#x20;

{% embed url="<https://webassembly.org/getting-started/advanced-tools/>" %}

If we use the tools from this website, we have two different methods:&#x20;

```
wasm2wat script.wasm > script.wat   # binary → readable
wat2wasm script.wat > script.wasm   # readable → binary
```

Once we convert to .wat, we can see the flag is at the bottom:
